Atlantic City, NJ, a popular tourist area, is experiencing another type of gambling. Unprotected sexual activities have led to a significant increase in STD rates.
The city in Atlantic County had 391 new chlamydia cases in 2015, and by 2016, that number was unchanged—Hoovering at 391 diagnoses. Gonorrhea cases didn’t stay the same, the city by the sea had 100 new diagnoses in 2015 and nearly 100 more in the following year. Overall, the county had 1,347 new chlamydia diagnoses in 2016 and 420 gonorrhea.
The New Jersey State Health Department is concerned about the growing rate of STDs including HIV. Atlantic County had a nearly 20 percent increase in new diagnoses between 2012 and 2016, leaving officials scrambling to offer more testing sites and education.
