Rising STD rates are affecting communities across the country, and Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, in Franklin County is no exception.
Chlamydia rates in the county averaged 270.3 cases out of 100,000 residents from 2015 to 2017, which represents 1,248 newly reported cases. Gonorrhea rates, on the other hand, averaged 49.4 cases out of 100,000 residents from 2015 to 2017, representing a total of 228 newly reported cases of gonorrhea.
Many of these newly reported STD cases involve residents ranging from 15 to 26 years old. In addition, statistics show that more women are diagnosed with chlamydia than men, while more men are diagnosed with gonorrhea than women.
County records also show that Franklin County had 9 newly reported cases of syphilis from 2015 to 2017.
According to Surveillance Reports, there were 142 residents living with HIV in Franklin County at the end of 2018. However, the number of newly reported HIV cases dropped significantly from 2017 to 2018, as the number of new HIV cases fell from 7 cases in 2017 to only 1 case in 2018.
