Health officials in Coconino County are worried about the rising STD rates, though they say it’s at about the same pace as the rest of the country. They are working within the community, trying to raise awareness and get people to come in for testing.
If a person tests positive, they notify that person’s sex partner(s) without naming names. They also provide mobile, fast-testing events within the community, and they have condoms and emergency contraception.
In 2016, the chlamydia rate in Coconino County was 753 cases per 100K people, about 42% higher than the US average. The gonorrhea and syphilis rates were 126 and 5. The same year, Coconino County’s HIV prevalence rate was 113.7 per 100K people, less than half of Arizona’s rate of 273.1.
Free STD testing is available at the county level for HIV only. Keep an eye on the community calendar to see if there are outreach events, especially during STD Awareness Month, where you can be tested for other STIs for free. Keep in mind many other people will be doing the same, though, so there may be a wait for services.
