As part of the Miami area, one would expect Hialeah to have high STD rates. And they are high, but lower than those in Miami itself, or Miami Shores or Miami Beach. STD rates and teen pregnancies are on the rise, and the recent statistics indicate that this problem is likely to continue. Sexual education programs not only help inform students about the dangers associated with engaging in unprotected sex, but it also covers the importance of regular STD testing.
While the abstinence only program does give some students the support they need to say “no”, it does not cover all of the risks associated with sexually transmitted diseases. Without comprehensive classes in place in the city schools, teens and their parents often do not realize that not all STDs are only transmitted through intercourse. Lower income neighborhoods often have a shortage of community health centers, and many residents simply cannot afford regular STD testing. When this is combined with a mistrust of government health officials, it can be difficult for community leaders to stress the importance of regular health screenings.
Before heading to one of the fabulous beaches in the Miami-Dade area it is important to take a few minutes to consider your sexual health. While STD rates are on the rise many residents are still choosing to put off this important health step due to the long lines at the community health centers, but now there is another option.
