Huntington Station, NY, a city in Suffolk County, is experiencing an STD crisis that’s not slowing down. While all STIs are on the rise, there’s been a significant rise in gonorrhea infections in Suffolk, with the number of new cases going from 662 in 2015 to 760 in 2017.
Chlamydia numbers have also increased with 3,964 in 2015 jumping to nearly 5,000 new diagnoses in 2017. A little less than half of them were women. Syphilis is also back with Suffolk County having 126 new infections of primary, secondary, and early latent cases in 2017.
Local Health officials in Long Island are worried about the increasing number of HIV infections in the area. Researchers have identified a “hot spot” or location with higher rates in Huntington Station, Westbury, and Hempstead, that have an estimated 1,000 residents that are unaware of their HIV positive status.
