Albany County Health Department’s effort in the fight against HIV/STDs is responsible for the reduced rates of infections witnessed in 2019 and 2018.
Laramie City, the county seat of Albany, had a steady increase in the rate of HIV cases between 2011 and 2015, with a rate of 68 per 100,000 persons and 79 per 100,000, respectively.
Chlamydia infections in the county hiked from a rate of 496.9 per 100,000 individuals in 2017 to 500.7 per 100,000 persons in 2018. A majority of these infections occurred in females aged 15 to 24 years.
On the contrary, Gonorrhea rates plummeted from a high of 47.6 per 100,000 persons in 2017 to 31.6 per 100,000 in 2018. A large percentage of reported Gonorrhea infections occurred among individuals under the age of 35.
Additionally, Syphilis infections in 2018 were at a rate of 2.6 per 100,000 individuals.
Albany County Health Department partners with other HIV/STD prevention service providers in organizing and supporting community events to distribute condom and conduct STD/HIV screening during community outreach. It also runs an HIV care and coordination program that offers financial assistance and counseling to PLWHA in the community.
