Health experts are raising concerns over increased numbers of sexually transmitted diseases in Rhode Island. The high incidence rates are attributed to a combination of factors such as irresponsible sexual behavior, reduced condom use, early indulgence in sexual activities and online hookups with sexual partners. STD rates have more than tripled in the last 10 years.
Newport contribute to a great number of STD infections getting Rhode Island in the wrong listing. In 2016, 4,936 cases of chlamydia were reported a 55% increase from 2007, 716 cases of gonorrhea over 407 in 2007 and 153 cases up from 46 cases.
Great increases were recorded in 2016 to 2017 where 33% and 23% rise in syphilis and gonorrhea were documented with chlamydia up by 8%. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention considers the figures dramatic and the highest in 10 years.
Rhode Island States Department of Health has sent out word to healthcare providers to pay more attention in reaching out to young people, gays, bisexuals, pregnant women and people with new or multiple sex partners with a directive to have them regularly screened.
Looking for STD testing services, public healthcare clinics such as the WellOne North Kingstown Clinic based along Callahan road and the Thundermist Health Center of the South County on 1 River street Wakefield are clinics to consider. Their services are confidential and federally approved.
