Madison County Health Department reports show that STD rates, including the rate of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are on the rise. In fact, communities within the county, including the county seat of Richmond, saw a significant increase in both chlamydia and gonorrhea rates from 2016 to 2017.
There was just over a 13% increase in the number of newly diagnosed cases of chlamydia in Madison County, as reports show a jump from 399 new cases in 2016 to 452 new cases in 2017. Gonorrhea rates, on the other hand, doubled over this two-year period, as the number of newly reported cases of gonorrhea spiked from 67 cases in 2016 to 138 cases in 2017.
Fortunately, syphilis rates in the county remained consistent with two newly reported cases for both 2016 and 2017.
Perhaps, most alarming is the fact that many of these newly reported STD cases involve residents between the ages of 15 and 24 years old.
According to 2018 Madison County Surveillance Reports, there were 8 newly diagnosed cases of HIV in the county in 2018 and 89 county residents were living with HIV as of June 30, 2018.
Richmond residents have access to several locations throughout the city and in nearby Lexington that might offer HIV or STD testing. Some of these health centers and clinics include Madison County Health Department, Baptist Health Urgent Care, Baptist Health Richmond Women’s Services, Central KY Urgent Care Center, AVOL Kentucky, and HIV Prevention Research.
In addition, many private doctor practices in Richmond might provide STD and HIV testing options. Many of these doctors’ offices are located just off the Eastern Bypass.
Some clinics and health care centers may advertise free STD testing. However, some clinics might not offer all STD testing options and not everyone qualifies for free services. In addition, there may be a longer wait time for test results.
