Introduction

What are the STI test options in Springdale,AR?

Health officials in northwest Arkansas are worried about the STD rates, especially HIV. They say they are seeing the virus in people over 50 as much as in the 20–29 age range. What’s most concerning is the fact that many of these diagnoses are made when the disease has already progressed and is difficult to treat, making it more likely that the patient will die of AIDS quickly.

They urge all sexually active people to use protection every time and get tested often, even if they are not experiencing symptoms and even if they believe they are in a monogamous relationship.

In 2016, Washington County had an HIV prevalence rate of 170.7 per 100K people, under the Arkansas rate of 222.3. The same year, Washington County’s chlamydia rate was 614.3, above the state average of 562. The gonorrhea and (primary and secondary) syphilis rates were 89.1 and 2.7.

You can find free STD testing at the county level. Keep in mind that public clinics often have long waits, increasing the possibility that someone will see you there. If this bothers you, there are other options. There’s a Planned Parenthood in nearby Fayetteville. They test for STIs and treat all except HIV, and the fee is on a sliding scale.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Arkansas has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the country. This statistic and others related to STDs have drawn greater attention to the topic of sexual education. Community leaders agreed that sexual education in schools needed an updated, and that consistent and evidence-based information about sexual health was critical to ensuring the health and safety of young adults.

In addition to improving sexual education resources at schools, parents need to have a bigger and more honest conversation about the issue with their children. It’s never too late to talk to teens and young adults about sexual health. There are many resources available online to help parents start the conversation. One tip is to make the conversation less formal and reduce awkwardness in order to make the issue more accessible and comfortable.
