The city of St. Bethlehem – just outside Clarksville in Montgomery County Tennessee – has experienced an increase in several sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) over the last couple of years. In fact, a recent study conducted in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute showed that Montgomery County has the highest rate of STD in the state.
The number of reported cases of Gonorrhea, Syphilis, and Chlamydia increased between 2013 and 2017. During this period, reported cases of Gonorrhea increased by slightly more than 7 percent while Chlamydia and Syphilis saw increases of 28% and 44% respectively.
At the same time, the number of people living with HIV/AIDS in this area decreased slightly. Those living with these conditions decreased by 3% while those newly diagnosed with HIV saw a 9% decrease.
