Illinois state health records show that STD rates in communities throughout Champaign County, including Urbana, IL, rose significantly from 2016 to 2017.
State records show that the number of newly reported syphilis cases (primary, secondary, and early latent stage) jumped by 50 percent, as the number of new cases increased from 22 reported cases in 2016 to 33 reported cases in 2017.
Gonorrhea rates in the county rose by 42 percent, as the number of newly reported cases climbed from 364 cases in 2016 to 518 cases in 2017. In addition, chlamydia rates increase by 20 percent, with the number of newly reported cases jumping from 1,423 cases in 2016 to 1704 cases in 2017.
County surveillance reports show that there were 205 newly reported cases of HIV in Champaign County in 2017 and more than 200 residents in the county were living with AIDS as of May 31, 2017.
