In 2013, 213 persons were newly diagnosed with HIV infections in Orange County, home to Castro Valley, constituting 13.8 per 100,000 of the infected population. Four years later, in 2017, the number had reduced to 206 at a rate of 12.4.
There were 400 Syphilis cases in 2013 at a rate of 25.4. In 2017, the number increased to 660 at a rate of 40.1. The highest infections were, however, in the male population with 565 reported cases compared to 95 female cases.
Chlamydia cases reported in 2013 were 8,549 at a rate of 274.8, and the number increased to 14,027 at 438.2 in 2017. The female population had the highest infection rates of 8,936.
Additionally, there were 1,859 Gonorrhoea cases in 2013 at a rate of 118.0, and in 2017, the number increased to 3,593 at a rate of 217.6. The infections were highest in the male population with 2,554 infections compared to to1,029 infections in the female population.
The Alameda County Health Department staffs are working closely with local health care providers to improve testing, diagnosis, and treatment of the infections. Furthermore, it provides subject matter expertise to community care providers and educates them about appropriate testing and reporting protocols to ensure effective testing and reporting.
