The Southeast coast of Florida is known for having high STD rates. Situated in Broward County between Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale, Deerfield Beach shares these problems.
In 2015, there were 18,867 people living with HIV or AIDS in Broward County, with a prevalence rate of 1,180 per 100K people. Health officials are mainly worried about all the people still out there who don’t know they are infected.

In 1981, President Reagan signed legislation that gave funding to abstinence only education within the school systems across the country. One of those programs known as Title V is still implemented in many areas of Florida, despite showing repeated failure to properly and effectively educate Florida’s students. There have been continued efforts by members of both the educational and judicial systems within Florida to steer away from an abstinence only curriculum. In 2013 Broward County implemented its own curriculum after the state statistics showed that the area had one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS.
Students are not required to take health education to graduate. If they do take some form of health education they will not necessarily learn about HIV/AIDS or STI’s and how to prevent them. Standards for high school students say they must learn how to respect others and themselves, but they are not required to learn about STI’s or how to prevent them. In fact, across the board Florida is behind other states when it comes to including curriculum on STI’s and HIV/AIDS as well as teen pregnancy.
According to a report done by SIECUS (Sexuality Information and Education) schools in Broward County use a curriculum called WAIT Training, promote Heterosexual marriage and gender stereotypes, employ fear and shame based tactics, misinformation about HIV/AIDS, and use national abstinence only supplementary materials. Broward County has made an alternative K-12 curriculum available through their website. During high school, this curriculum discusses a variety of subjects pertaining to sexual wellness including STI’s. Included in the program are resources for both students and parents.
Also available is a course called OWL. OWL (Our Whole Lives) which is offered through the Universalist Utilitarian Church of Boca Raton. OWL promotes diversity and answers to questions asked by both parents and students. While offered by the church, OWL has no religious affiliation. In addition to these classes, the local Planned Parenthood in Boca Raton offers free condoms to those needing them. This would be a 19-minute drive from Deerfield Beach.

As of 2014 the number of black females infected with HIV in the local area was 15.4 times greater than that of white females. Black males are 1.6 times more infected than white males. 68% of male infections is a result of male to male interaction, while 80% of women are infected from an interaction with a male. 8% of women are also infected either my drug injection or by other means.
Of the adolescent women infected statewide, 18% of those women live in the Broward area. This area is the second greatest area impacted in Florida, falling only behind Miami-Dade County. There is a possible correlation between poverty and those impacted by STI’s. African Americans and females make up the largest portion of those living below poverty level in Deerfield.
Black individuals make up 37% of the population living below poverty level, while females account for 7.5% of the 17.7% of the total population living in poverty. The rate of women enrolled in female health services is also greater among non-black women (6,438) than it is among black women (902). While women had a higher graduation rate than men (180 women and 31 men), there were 108 more times a Caucasian graduate than there were non-Hispanic blacks.
At an Elementary school level, there doesn’t seem to be any direct correlation between education and STD’s or HIV/AIDS. For example, the ethnic minority makes up for 78% at Deerfield High School and the graduation rate is 85%. However, there could be a correlation between the fact that 69% of those students are at an economic disadvantage and their college readiness index is low.
One of the nearest locations for HIV testing is Quest Diagnostics in Deerfield Beach. They offer online appointment booking and take a variety of insurances including Aetna, Cigna and Medicaid. The website says a doctor’s order for a test is required. Lab Corp also offers testing in Deerfield. They offer a comprehensive 10 test panel that covers the most common STI’s.
