Lafayette, CO, a city in Boulder County, is fighting an STD epidemic.
In 2016, the county reported 1,241 chlamydia infections. A year later in 2017, it went up to 1,281.
Gonorrhea diagnoses are also increasing with 173 new cases in 2016, jumping to 206 in 2017.
Primary and secondary syphilis infections aren’t decreasing. In 2016, it had nine new cases, and in 2017 the number of new infections remained at nine. The county has the 14th highest rate of syphilis in the state.
State health officials are concerned about the rising STD rates in Boulder County and are asking all sexually active individuals to get tested and seek treatment when necessary to prevent the spread of these diseases.
