STD rates are still rising in Florida, and health officials say that young people are meeting people on “hook-up apps” for sex, but do not understand the risks of unprotected sex. Many of them were born or came of age after the AIDS scare of the ‘80s had abated, so they didn’t see people dying of the disease.
While treatments are now available, they are expensive and most people with STDs are uninsured. And budget cuts in the public health sector mean that it’s harder to educate young people about safe sex.
In 2015, there were 7,836 people living with HIV or AIDS in Palm Beach County, with a prevalence rate of 639 per 100K people. This is just above the Florida average of 615.
In 2017, Palm Beach County had 5,888 chlamydia cases, at a rate of 417.3 per 100K people. The gonorrhea and infectious syphilis rates were 97.7 and 7.8.
The Presidential Women’s Center on Northpoint Pkwy offers HIV testing. At least one charitable clinic offers free STD testing in the area, but only for HIV. There is a Planned Parenthood in West Palm Beach. They test for STIs and treat all except HIV, and the fee is on a sliding scale. Age plays a huge role in STD cases, but it is not only teenagers and young adults that are getting infected. With its beautiful oceanfront, the city sees its share of young people. Females between the ages of 20–29 were reported to have syphilis more than any other age group in the state. Twenty-three percent of all new HIV diagnoses are among young people ages 13–24.
