The Cumberland Health Department has noted a decline in the number of new HIV cases reported in the county over the years. In 2015, 17 new cases of HIV infections at a rate of 35 percent were reported, and this was lower than the 32 cases at a rate of 55 percent reported in 2014. This was attributed to the increase in sex education among young people.
The department recorded 827 new Chlamydia infections at a rate of 24 percent in the year 2014, and the number infections dropped to 789 at a rate of 20 percent in 2015. However, Chlamydia recorded the greatest numbers of infections in comparison to other STDs.
There has been a rapid increase in the number of new Gonorrhea infections reported over the years. In 2014, 60 cases at a rate of 25 percent were reported, and the number rose to 143 cases at a rate of 34 percent in 2015, with young people aged 20-24 recording most infections.
The health department members also observed an increase in the number of new Syphilis infections reported in 2015 as compared to previous years. 6 cases at a rate of 28 percent were reported in 2014, and 26 new cases at a rate of 52 percent were reported in 2015, with the majority of cases falling on the white male community.
The Cumberland Health Department has set strategies and policies to minimize the spread of STDs in the county. Some of the plans implemented include sexual education awareness, STD outreach programs that cater to the needs of PLWHA, the establishment of affordable STD clinics, and the distribution of free condoms.
