The Wilkes-Barre City Health Department continues to deal with a plethora of health problems affecting the residents, among them being sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Luzerne County, where Wilkes-Barre City is located, has shown an upward trend in its STD rates.
Through the Enterprise Data Dissemination Informatics Exchange (EDDIE), the health department revealed statistics for STDs rates in 2016. They showed that Luzerne County had 954 chlamydia cases during that year. The rate was 301.5 infections per 100,000 people.
The same data also showed that gonorrhoea had a rate of 36.7 per 100,000 residents in Luzerne County in 2016. The number of diagnoses reported that year was 116.
Information from the Pennsylvania Department of Health further showed that syphilis had fewer cases in 2016 in Luzerne County than gonorrhoea and chlamydia. Only 12 infections of the sexually transmitted disease were recorded.
