The county’s public health department reported a fluctuating number of new HIV infections in Oxon Hill, MD, between 2016 and 2018. In the first year of reference, there were 279 cases, which rose to 309 in 2017 and decreased by one to 308 in 2018.
There was a significant increase in new Chlamydia infections reported between 2016 and 2018. In 2016, the department recorded 6,753 new cases at a rate of 741.1, whereas in the following year, there were 8,013 diagnoses at a prevalence of 877.9 per 100,000 people.
Public health records pointed out an increase in new Gonorrhea infections from 1,282 cases in 2015 at a rate of 141.1 to 2,020 in 2018.
Additionally, the incidence rate of Syphilis infections had soared from 81 cases at 8.9 cases in 2015 to 143 cases in 2017.
Public health administrators at the county level have expressed concern over the rising number of HIV/STD cases in the area.
