Home to A&M University it is not surprising that College Station has a high STD rate. What was surprising is that the number of sexually transmitted viruses reported each year wasn’t the highest in the state.

Health officials are quick to point out that this is only due to the city’s smaller population. When the percentages are compared per 100,000 residents the statistics suddenly do not look as good. The statistics begin to look even worse when compared to the rest of the nation. College Station and Brazos County are currently seeing an increase in the number of sexually transmitted diseases reported each year.

In 2013 the Chlamydia rate was reported at 506 per 100,000 residents compared to 530 reported in 2015. In the first six months of 2016 there rate is already at 493.9. If this continues for the rest of the year, the county could see Chlamydia rates double.

It is not only Chlamydia rates that are rising, but Gonorrhea incidents are up as well. While the number of infections reported in women seems to be decreasing, according to the CDC the same is not true in men. Syphilis and HIV/AIDS diagnoses are also up in men, and the statistics show that these diseases are affecting residents of all ages and ethnicities.

Some of the other statistics that the county health department wants residents to be aware of so they will understand how important it is to be tested for all STDs include,

  • In the first six months of 2016 the Chlamydia rate was up to 493.9 per 100,000 residents compared to 505 per 100,000 residents reported in 2012.
  • In 2011 the STD rate for the county was 609 to 1 for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and Syphilis incidents.
