Instances of new HIV and STDs infections are on the rise in Onalaska, a city in La Grosse County. HIV cases fluctuated from 2010 to 2019. In 2010, the city had only one infection at 0.9, but at the end of 2019, a slight increase to four new infections at a rate of 3.4 was noted.
For Chlamydia, the infections spiked from 430 at 378 in 2011 to 612 cases at 543 in 2019. Female infections were the highest at 296 in 2011 and 413 in 2019. Most of them were identified among women within the 20-24 age group.
Meanwhile, Gonorrhea soared to a new height of 87 at 77 in 2019 from 51 at 45 in 2011. Women were the most infected at 30 cases in 2011 compared to 21 infections noted in men. In 2019, the stats were shocking because men led at 46 cases and women at 21.
In 2010, Syphilis infections were non-existent, but in 2019, a total of 20 new were reported at 18 per 100,000. Men are especially at risk because they accounted for the 17 cases, while women 3.
