Additional STD Test Statistics in Council Bluffs, IA

State officials feel the STD figures in Iowa are alarming. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) notes total cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis recently reached record high levels.

“The figures are alarming,” said IDPH Director Tom Newton. “It’s especially concerning that we’re seeing the greatest number of cases reported in teenagers and young adults.”

There recently were 8,643 reported chlamydia cases – a 67 percent increase in reported cases during a period of 10 years. There were 1,928 reported gonorrhea cases. This is a 19 percent increase in reported cases during a period of 10 years.

Concerning syphilis cases, a 52 percent increase in reported cases during a period of 10 years was reported. Officials note number of cases of STDs in Iowa would be even higher if HPV and herpes were reportable diseases in the state.

Rachel Stolz is a registered nurse with the Council Bluffs Health Department. She is not surprised by the report. She feels unprotected sex and multiple sex partners are causing the increase.

She coordinates the city’s adult STD program. It has a focus on those who are 18 and older. Her department provides prevention and treatment information. The department also provides consultation, condoms, and HIV/AIDs testing. The city also contracts with a doctor to operate and STD clinic providing testing.

The Health Department provides STD outreach at the county jail only. Stolz noted other STD services are provided to people who come to the Health Department office seeking help.

The department does not provide information to people younger than age 18. There is no program for that age group. The staff does not go into schools. “I don’t think the schools have a prevention program, but I think they should,” she said.

It is a constant struggle. We do not know why the rates are so high. The rates are a reflection of national trends. The United States has some of the highest rates for STDs and teen pregnancy in the industrialized world.

The whole country is struggling with STD issues. We also do not know why your area is seeing such high rates.

This education should take place in grades one through 12. Research based means information that is medically accurate. The information should also be objective and come from professional organizations and agencies with relevant expertise in the field.
