Located east of Baton Rouge and northwest of New Orleans, Hammond is home to the fastest-growing University in the nation—Southeastern Louisiana University.
Though the state of Louisiana tops the charts with high rates of sexually transmitted diseases, the Hammond area has the lowest rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea in the region.
In 2015, Hammond reported a rate of 447.2 out of 100,000 people for chlamydia and 118.6 per 100,000 for gonorrhea. Syphilis rates (primary and secondary) were recorded at 4.8 per 100,000 people which is the 2nd lowest syphilis rate for this region. Only 1 case of congenital syphilis was reported for the year of 2015.
Southeastern Louisiana University is dedicated to providing education and resources on sexual health to their whole community and especially their LGBTQ+ students. Get yourself tested screenings are available to university students any day by appointment. These are quick, confidential screenings for those who have no symptoms but wish to be tested for HIV, gonorrhea, or chlamydia. If you have symptoms of an STI, a medical examination may be necessary. Check your campus calendar for Women’s Health Days or STD awareness month to watch for free testing opportunities.
For non-students, there are other affordable clinics available in the Hammond area to assist you with screening. North Oaks Walk-In Clinic on Morrison boulevard offers same-day testing for HIV, but as it is a walk-in clinic be prepared in case there is a long waiting time. Gulf South Medical Testing on Railroad avenue provides both HIV and STD testing to walk-ins, insured, and uninsured people.
