Just north of Lake Pueblo State Park at the northwest corner of the city of Pueblo lies the community of Pueblo West. This census-designated place has just under 30,000 residents and a growing STD problem.
During the five year period from 2014 to 2018, Pueblo West saw an increase in the prevalence rates of both STDs and HIV. The 3.2% growth of STDs was in line with the increase experienced by the state of Colorado as a whole while the 7.9% rise in HIV rates far exceeded the 3.4% reduction the state realized.
Moreover, the first half of 2019 has demonstrated a 7.5% increase in STD prevalence rates since 2018. This indicates a growth of these diseases in the Pueblo West area that is increasing exponentially.
The progress made against STDs in Pueblo West is threatened by a new resurgence of these diseases within our community.
