STD Test Statistics in Oxford

Throughout the past decade, the number of STD cases that are reported each year is continuing to rise at a steady rate. The most prevalent STD within this region includes chlamydia, followed closely by gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, Herpes, and even AIDS.

According to the annual Center for Disease Control 2013 report regarding STDs of young individuals between the ages of 15 and 24 within Mississippi, within a 100,000 person sample size:

  • Lafayette county had an average of 1000 – 3000 cases of chlamydia
  • Lafayette County had an average of 300 – 600 cases of gonorrhea
  • Lafayette County had a ‘medium’ report rate of primary and secondary syphilis, between 2 – 10 cases.

Overall, the state itself has a much higher rate of STD cases per 100,000 person sample. For example, according to the 2013 STD report provided by the CDC, Mississippi had an overall rate of 2970, while the U.S. average consisted of a rate of 2164 chlamydia. Additionally, Mississippi had a gonorrhea rate of 766, while the US had an average of 421.3.

Although the city may have a lower rate of STD cases in the county, it’s still contributing to the problem at hand. Furthermore, due to the fact that a number of its neighboring counties have significantly higher STD rates, the area as a whole is much more at risk than those more isolated from the issue.

The Mississippi Department of Health also released a report within 2010, addressing the issue head-on. According to this report, Lafayette County had an average of 38-101 cases of chlamydia, 7-5 cases of syphilis, and 5-8 cases of HIV.

Awareness, Education, and STD Testing

The rising number of various STD cases that are reported each year is an alarming issue. However, the community has done its fair share of providing resources and tools for those who are interested in the topic.

For example, within the public education system, sexual health, safe sex practices, and STD awareness are all topics that are covered. Further, community members can educate themselves using the Internet and reading through the number of websites provided by the community and government.

However when the state released its 2010 STD and HIV epidemic report, an alarming trend became quite visible. The report outlined the number of STD cases within the state and broken down into a number of demographics and characteristics. What stood out the most was the astronomical amount of chlamydia and gonorrhea cases that were reported for individuals between the ages of 15 and 29. This age group reported significantly higher STD incidences consistently throughout this five-year timeframe.

In response, many community members felt that more needs to be done in order to educate those within the age bracket of 15 through 29. There are a number of options that the community is considering including educating students within the public education system at an earlier age, pushing a strong marketing campaign that will raise awareness for this issue, speaking with parents to explain the severity of the issue, and even promote awareness throughout the campuses within the state.

Sexual Health and Demographics

The city is rich in culture and diversity, something the community prides itself on. The city is welcoming to all ethnicities, ages, heritages, and personalities, making it a great location to settle down.

When taking a closer look at the number of sexually transmitted disease cases within the state, a disproportionate disadvantage by race was discovered. According to the report, those who are considered white had the lowest risk of contracting chlamydia within the state. However, Hispanics were slightly more at risk, while African-Americans remained significantly more at risk for contracting chlamydia.

The report also broke down the number of committee cases by sex. Surprisingly, females were at a significantly higher risk of contracting chlamydia than males. For example, in 2010, the rate for males contracting chlamydia was 5,037 while females had a rate of 14,599, significantly higher.

More could be done in the city for those who are most at risk for STDs. The most at risk individuals are African American females between the ages of 15 and 29. The community believes that increasing awareness, knowledge for available public resources (such as free STD testing clinics), and safe sex practices are key to reducing the annual rate of STD reports.

Improving Sexual Health with STD Testing

Although the area does not have the highest number of STDs the city could be doing more to help prevent such situations. The city does offer a number resources to educate its community members and provide awareness for their sexual health, but not everyone takes advantage of these things.
