Great Bend, KS, a city in and the county seat of Barton County, witnessed reduced rates of HIV diagnoses between 2017 and 2019. New HIV cases in the county were reported at a rate of 20 in every group of 100,000 individuals in 2017 and 13 per 100,000 population in 2019.
On the other hand, there was a minute spike in the number of new Syphilis infections, according to surveillance data obtained in 2018 and 2019. The first year of reference had no new conditions, but in 2019, one person was positively diagnosed.
The same downward development was evident when comparing Gonorrhea surveillance records compiled within the same time frame. In this case, officials noted 24 individuals tested positive at a rate of 90.6 in 2017, and in 2019, only nine new cases were reported at a rate of 34.5.
That aside, the number of new Chlamydia infections rose significantly between that same period. 88 new infections were confirmed at a rate of 332.4 in 2018, with the following year having 125 cases occurring at a rate of 478.7.
Barton County public health officials continue to implement strategies in the statewide STD/HIV prevention program. Through funds received via this initiative, they’ve been able to direct their resources towards improving access to screening, PrEP-related, and community-level prevention activities. Additionally, they’ve been striving to reduce HIV/STD-related health inequities and disparities while improving linkage and retention in care to support viral suppression in HIV positive individuals.
For HIV/STD screening, treatment, or prevention, county residents can visit Barton County Family Planning, Heart of Kansas Family Health, Planned Parenthood - Wichita Health Center, and Xpress Wellness Urgent Care.
