Tahlequah is a city in Cherokee County that has registered relatively constant HIV prevalence rates since 2014. The county recorded a slight increase in the rate of individuals diagnosed with HIV, from 23 per 100,000 persons in both 2014 and 2015 to 29 in 2020.
Based on data obtained from the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH), the county's rate of Gonorrhea infections showed an upward surge over the years, from 36.2 per 100,000 individuals in 2011 to a high of 180.7 in 2016. In 2015, females accounted for 54.72% of the total infections.
The rate of total Syphilis infections fluctuated. In 2012, there were no reported incidences and escalated to a high of 6.2 per 100,000 persons in 2015, followed by a significant decrease to 2.1 in 2016.
Chlamydia infections increased by more than double, from a rate of 372.4 recorded in 2011 to 821.2 in 2014, followed by a 27.5% decrease to 595.5 per 100,000 persons in 2016. In 2015, 70.89% of those infected were females, and whites, both male and female, accounted for 38.3%.
Through its STD/HIV services, Cherokee County Health Dept provides free and confidential testing, evaluation, counseling, health education, and treatment to city and county residents to eliminate and prevent transmission in the community.
City dwellers can visit several health clinics to access quality STD/HIV testing services. These include Northeastern Health System Urgent Care, Cherokee Nation W. W. Hastings Hospital, Planned Parenthood - Peoria Health Center, and Northeastern Health System Tahlequah.
You can also visit some city hospitals to access free STD testing, but bookable appointments might not be an option, and eligibility could depend on income and welfare.
