Locally referred to as Gansett, Narragansett, RI, is a town in Washington County. The county’s HIV infection surveillance team concluded a downward development in the rate at which new HIV infections occurred between 2019 and 2020.
In 2019, new HIV cases were reported at a rate of 71 per 100,000 persons, whereas, in 2020, the rate of infection was 52 in every group of 100,000 individuals.
Despite that, an inconsistent pattern appeared regarding the number of new Gonorrhea infections in the county. In 2017, there were 53 positively diagnosed individuals at a rate of 42.0, whereas 62 cases were recorded in 2018 at an incidence rate of 49.1. However, a drop was observed in 2019 when the surveillance team tabled 58 cases at a rate of 45.9.
Furthermore, local health officials in the county noted a negative difference in the number of Chlamydia diagnoses recorded between 2017 and 2019. In this context, they reported 462 new infections in 2019 at a rate of 365.7 instead of the 487 cases recorded in the previous year at a prevalence rate of 386.0.
Similarly, there was a drop in the number of new Syphilis cases reported between 2018 and 2019. In 2018, four persons tested positive at a rate of 3.2, and in 2019, only three positive diagnoses were made at an incidence rate of 2.4.
Representatives from the county's local health department recognized positive results in their fight against the spread of HIV/STDs. They attribute this success to their strict adherence to state-funded programs such as the jurisdictional HIV prevention plan that aims to improve community engagement during the prevention planning process and develop early intervention programs for existing cases to reduce mortality and morbidity.
