Wyandotte, MI, a city in Wayne County, is fighting an STD outbreak.
The rates of all STIs are rising fast. Between 2013 to 2017, the average number of chlamydia cases in the county was 14,994, and in 2018, the pattern held with 15,305 new infections.
Gonorrhea diagnoses aren’t slowing down. The average number of new cases between 2013 and 2017 was 4,923. In 2018, the county reported 6,374 new infections.
Syphilis cases are also increasing with an average of 554 between 2013 and 2017, and nearly 800 new diagnoses in 2018.
HIV/AIDS infections are rising. A report from Wayne County, excluding Detroit, found the area had 190 cases per 100,000 in 2017.
County health officials are concerned about the increasing rate of STD infections and are urging sexually active individuals to get tested regularly to help reduce the spread of these diseases.
