Murraysville, NC, a census-designated place in New Hanover County, experienced a fluctuation in the rate of HIV transmission between 2017 and 2019. The county’s disease surveillance team reported 34 new cases in 2017 at a rate of 17.2 per 100,000 population, 23 in 2018 at a rate of 11.4, and 28 in the final year of reference at a rate of 13.7.
That aside, within the same period, there seemed to be an undulation in the number of new Gonorrhea infections, where 2017 had 408 cases occurring at a rate of 178.4 while 2018 had 387 diagnoses happening at a rate of 166.6, a value that rose in 2019 to 435 new infections prevailing at a rate of 185.5.
An upward development was also true in the case of Chlamydia diagnoses made in 2018 and 2019. While there were 1,216 new infections in 2018 at an incidence rate of 523.6, 2019 saw 1,301 positively diagnosed cases at a rate of 554.9.
However, local health officials were pleased to announce a drop in the number of new Syphilis infections reported between 2018 and 2019. In 2018, 50 people tested positive at a rate of 21.5, whereas the following year had 44 new conditions occurring at a rate of 18.8.
Local health departments in New Hanover County have expressed concern over the steady increase in the number of new HIV/STD infections. As such, to prevent further increases in the rate of transmission, they’ve been providing outreach screening services in non-clinical settings and HIV/STD prevention education, as well as coordinating condom distribution programs.
