Rockledge, FL, a city in the Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville Metropolitan area, and Brevard County, is experiencing an STD outbreak.
Gonorrhea cases are rising. In 2015, the county reported 423 new diagnoses, and by 2018, it jumped to 482.
Chlamydia infections are also going up with 1,747 new cases in 2015, rising to more than 2,000 in 2018.
Infectious syphilis diagnoses are growing. In 2015, there were 20 new infections, and in 2018, there were nearly 60.
The county had 40 early cases of syphilis in 2015 and 2018, it more than doubled with 94 new infections.
In 2015, the county had no congenital syphilis reports. However, in 2018, three babies were born with it.
New HIV infections in Brevard is also increasing with 58 diagnoses in 2015 and 68 in 2018.
STD rates went up 23% in 2016 and county officials are still concerned about the growing rates. They’re urging all sexually active persons to seek STD testing to reduce the spread of these infections.
There are a few locations in and near Rockledge that provide comprehensive STD testing and related services such as treatment and aftercare.
One option is the Florida Department of Health in Brevard County at the Viera Clinic on Judge Fran Jamieson Way. This location is accessible by a public bus route.
Another place a little further away is the Curative Care Center on US HW 1 in Titusville.
Some sites may offer free STD testing. They could ask for proof of income, and rapid results might not be possible. Its possible patients will have to pay for treatment, too.
