Also known as St. Anthony Village, St. Anthony is a city in Ramsey and Hennepin counties, which have been experiencing HIV outbreaks, recording the highest number of HIV diagnoses between 2019 and 2021.
Hennepin County had 134 diagnoses in 2019, 101 in 2020, and 145 in 2021, while Ramsey had 41 new cases in 2019, 38 in 2020, and 41 in 2021.
Hennepin County, the larger part of the city, had a fluctuation in new Gonorrhea infections within the same time frame. Officials reported 3,601 new cases in 2019 and 4,329 in 2020, which dropped to 4,181 in 2021.
The same trend was noted in new Chlamydia infections, with the number of diagnoses reducing from 8,405 in 2019 to 7,301 in 2020. In 2021, the number of new cases had risen to 7,643.
Similarly, there was an undulation in new Syphilis cases during this period, and the county had the highest number of diagnoses statewide. There were 504 new infections in 2019, 488 in 2020, and 648 in 2021.
Hennepin County has a significant impact on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Minnesota, with over 130 diagnoses every year.
In response, local health officials have been focusing on identifying undiagnosed persons and those out of care and getting them into care, using PrEP and PEP to reduce transmission among at-risk persons, and ensuring equitable access to prevention and care resources.
