Commerce, GA, is a vibrant city in Jackson County, providing a great place to live and do business. Yet, the health of its residents has been affected by the STDs that are on the rise in the region.
In 2018 and 2019, the county health department reported 7 and 9 new HIV diagnoses, respectively. There were no HIV case counts in 2020 due to the lack of testing services available during the pandemic.
Other STDs have also shown an upward trend. Chlamydia, for instance, stood at 201 in 2019. While it dropped to 172 in 2020, the number of cases rose to 235 the following year.
In the year 2019, Gonorrhea recorded 40 instances. There was a slight increase to 44 in 2020, less than the 112 persons with the STDs in 2021. As for primary and secondary Syphilis, occurrences have been few. A total of 10 incidents were reported from 2019 to 2021.
The Jackson County Health Department started a program for adolescents aged 11 to19 to help young people make better sexual choices and seek medical help as soon as possible when diagnosed with an STD.
Teen Matters is another program the public health officials offer for confidential and age-appropriate services, including health and sex education and STD testing.
STD services are available in several clinics and health centers in Commerce, GA, including The Jackson County Health Department, Commerce Urgent Care & Family Practice, and MedLink Jackson.
When looking for free STD testing sites, you should call the clinic first to inquire if they offer the service. But, the clinicians may ask you to schedule an appointment before accessing the STI screening. Long waiting times are inevitable in facilities with few medical staff.
