Chuckwalla, CA, is a community in eastern Riverside County that's fighting an STD outbreak.
Chlamydia cases are skyrocketing. In 2014, the area reported 8,736 new infections, and in 2018, the county had 11,487.
Gonorrhea is another concern. Riverside recorded just 1,667 diagnoses for the preventable STD in 2014. By 2018, the area topped 4,000 new cases with 4,082.
Primary and secondary syphilis is another matter that has health officials worried. In 2014, the county had 188 infections. Four years later, that number jumped to 303 cases.
Early non-primary, non-secondary syphilis is on the rise. In 2014, the area recorded 142 diagnoses. In 2018, it had 352.
Total syphilis infections are also going up quickly. In 2014, there were 330, and by 2018, it nearly doubled to 655 new cases.
Riverside California County health officials are asking all sexually active individuals to help slow the spread of STIs in the area. They hope through education and regular STD testing, the number of new infections for all STIs will drop.
