California Department of Public Health said there was a 45% increase in 2017 for cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis compared to the previous five years in the city and surrounding metro areas.
Sacramento’s steadily climbing STD rates indicate a problem of epidemic proportions.
The rate of chlamydia in 2017 was 505.2 cases per 100,000 people, and gonorrhea reached 190.3 cases per 100,000. That was a 9% increase from the prior year for chlamydia and a 16% increase for rates of gonorrhea. The numbers have been steadily rising over the past four years.
The 2017 data shows an increase of 45% since 2013. Sacramento County ranked as the 6th in the state for chlamydia, the 8th highest for gonorrhea, and the 10th highest for primary and secondary syphilis cases.
Decreases in condom use, increases in partners, and ease of access to partners through social media and dating apps are being pointed to as causes for the STD epidemic. Reductions in public health funding are a problem. While some are lobbying for better funding measures in the state government, others are providing low cost services, condoms and free STD testing, though often only for HIV, to help combat the problem.

With the rising number of teens and adults who test positive for a STD, the governor has recently signed a new law.
While parents are allowed to keep their teenagers out of the sexual education program, the new law states that all public school systems must offer comprehensive classes for students. The classes will be offered in middle and high school and cover multiple topics, including the dangers of STDs..
Regular Herpes testing in Sacramento can help prevent students from spreading the disease. This is also true for regular HIV testing in Sacramento. This is only an example of some of the subjects covered in the classes.
With California and the city of Sacramento requiring all public schools to offer comprehensive sexual education classes, health officials are hopeful that the rising number of STDs will begin to decrease noticeably.
The city’s high percentage of illicit drug users is also contributing to the rising STD rates, and many health officials also believe that the increasing number of positive Syphilis diagnoses is due to this growing problem.
Along with engaging in risky behaviors, many residents are simply not aware. Cultural and religious beliefs can interfere with an ability to be tested regularly. These same beliefs can also evoke feelings of embarrassment and shame.
With certain stereotypes still commonly associated with some sexually transmitted diseases, it is difficult for health officials to convince residents that anyone can contract a STD.
Now that all public middle and high schools are required to offer comprehensive sexual education classes, city officials are hopeful that the statistics for the next twenty years will show a significant decrease in STI rates.
