Named in honor of Ninian Edwards, the Governor of Illinois territory, Edwardsville is the county seat of Madison County. In the year 2017, Madison County reported 261 cases of HIV at a prevalence rate of 116 per 100000 people. The rate went down the following year to 204 at a prevalence rate of 91 per 100000 people.
According to the county health ranking reports, Chlamydia cases also went down from 1072 cases reported in 2017 at a prevalence rate of 401.2 to 1050 cases at a prevalence rate of 393.9 in the following year.
However, Gonorrhea case have been on the rise.In the year 2016, there were 267 cases of Gonorrhea, an increase from the 245 cases reported in the previous year. Syphilis cases have also increased with zero cases reported in 2014 but 5 and 10 cases reported for the year 2015 and 2016 respectively.

Through STD awareness campaigns which offer free STD testing, the Madison County Health Department is urging residents to take advantage of these campaigns and get to know their HIV and STD status.
