Just this side of the Mississippi River lies the Granite City, IL. This community lies on the eastern bank of the Mississippi, just over the state line from Missouri. It is a part of Madison County and is currently recovering from an upswing in STD and HIV prevalence rates.
During the five-year period from 2013 to 2017, this area saw a rise in these rates. In fact, STD rates rose by 9.3% while HIV rates climbed by 13.7%.
However, from 2017 to 2018, ramped up efforts to inform and educate the public in this community caused these numbers to drop. During that one year, STD prevalence rates fell by 1.8% and HIV rates dropped by a whopping 21.6%. Yet, the first half of 2019 shows those numbers on the rise again.
The start of 2019 is marred by increasing STD rates in our little community. Granite City has got to stand firm in its resolve to eradicate these diseases.
