County health officials in Troy, IL, a city in Madison County, are still struggling to eradicate HIV infections. The epidemiological response team from the Madison County Health Department estimates that roughly 204 people in Madison County were living with HIV as of 2018. To make it worse, in 2021, the number of individuals diagnosed with HIV increased to 219.
Prevention efforts by the Madison County Health Department have encouraged a decline in new STD diagnoses. For instance, Primary Syphilis cases dropped from 15 in 2019 to 10 in 2020, while Early Syphilis incidences declined from 25 to 14 in the same period.
Although many individuals were diagnosed with Chlamydia, there was some hope as the infections dropped from 1,244 to 1,114 in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
However, Gonorrhea infections rose from 441 in 2019 to 532 in 2020, indicating a 21 percent increase in the two years.
Prevention programs implemented by the Madison County Health Department, such as educating local medical providers and the public about infection rates and advocating for resources for persons disproportionately affected by STIs, have led to a decline in STDs such as Chlamydia and Syphilis.
To reduce HIV and Gonorrhea rates, the health department promotes adequate condom distribution accompanied by counseling and education among infected and negative persons.
Regular screening is an effective tool for preventing the spread of HIV, hence the reason why some clinics offer free STD testing to encourage more individuals to get tested. However, the free tests may be invasive and painful, and meeting with a doctor may be awkward.
Planned Parenthood - Fairview Heights Health Center and Anderson Hospital ExpressCare Troy are some clinics where you can receive sexual health services. Other medical facilities in Troy, IL, where you can get tested include Memorial Hospital Shiloh and East Side Health District
