Saugus, MA, a city in Essex County that’s also part of the Greater Boston area, is experiencing a major STD outbreak.
In 2014, the county reported 2,622 new chlamydia diagnoses or 340 cases per 100,000 residents. A year later, in 2015, it reported 2,875 new cases or 370 infections for every 100,000 people.
Also increasing are gonorrhea diagnoses. There were 298 new cases or a rate of 38 infections for every 100,000 residents. In 2016, infections jumped to 356 cases and a rate of 46 new infections per every 100,000 people.
Syphilis infections are rising, with 31 new diagnoses in 2015 and 48 in 2016.
State and local health officials are concerned about the major STD outbreak in Saugus and Essex County and are urging all sexually-active individuals to get tested regularly and help reduce the spread of these infections.
