Additional STD Test Statistics in Vestavia Hills, AL

The state of Alabama has a higher rate for STI’s than nearly any other portion of the United States. This is due for the most part to the fact that the state has a higher rate of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea infection, but a lower rate for Syphilis infections. The state has the third highest rate for Chlamydia and the second highest for Gonorrhea.

The gender demographic most impacted by Chlamydia infections were females. Within the state, nearly 72% of Chlamydia infections were in women. The age demographic most impacted were those aged 15-24 years of age. The ethnic demographic most impacted were Black, non-Hispanics.

Gonorrhea was also the most prevalent in women – accounting for nearly 55% of the cases. As with Chlamydia, the age demographic most impacted were those aged 15-24. The ethnic demographic most impacted were Black, non-Hispanics.

On a slightly more positive note, the state ranked 23rd in the nation for Syphilis infections, meaning the rate for infection was lower for this STI. The gender most impacted were males – accounting for 90% of infections. The ethnic demographic most impacted were Black, non-Hispanics – accounting for 60% of the cases reported.

There are HIV cases in every county of the state including Jefferson and Shelby. The CDC believes that 18% of those infected with HIV do not know it. This means that the statistics for HIV are not accurate and are higher than reported. In 2015 alone there were 481 new cases of HIV. HIV infections are likeliest to be found in men who have engaged in sex with other men (62%), and Black, non-Hispanics (71.3%).

STD Testing and Sexual Health Education in Vestavia Hills, AL

As with many educational arenas on the so-called Bible Belt, there is a continuous heated debate as to what is permissible to be taught in the classroom. A new House bill has re-established what curriculum should be allowed. The Bill states that new curriculum should be medically sound and age appropriate. While the Bill does not require schools to teach sex education, it does require the information they use be up to date. When asked, many students believe that sexual education within the school system falls below standards for other subjects. In many cases the education a student receives is equivalent to a single chapter in a textbook. While most students agree that the information they receive in schools is inadequate, adults are divided. Some agree that it is more than enough, and that parents should be the ones teaching their students about sex. Others believe that there needs to be a more efficient and up to date method of teaching sexual health education within the classroom.

Outside the classroom, there are resources for those wishing to educate themselves. For example, The Southeastern Pediatric Association offers a variety of learning resources on their website, though they offer no physical services at their locations. Their resource library offers information on sexual well-being and information on HIV/AIDS.

The National Coalition to Support Sexuality Education also has a variety of resources. These resources include information and curriculum for schools, families, and individuals. Topics range from medically driven information to abstinence only curriculum.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Demographics in Vestavia Hills, AL

There could possibly be a correlation between the fact that females are the gender demographic with the greatest number living in poverty and the fact that they also have the highest rate of Gonorrhea and Chlamydia.  In 2015, 4.33% of the city was living below the poverty level. Of this, the majority were women aged 25-34 and 55-64. Therefore, there could be a connection between the poverty level of many women and the number of women infection with STI’s.

There could also be a connection between the fact that Black, non-Hispanic women were less likely to receive preventive health services than White, non-Hispanic women and the fact that they were also the likeliest ethnic and gender demographic to be impacted by Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. In 2015, there were 1,416 Black, non-Hispanic women enrolled in preventive services and 3,166 White, non-Hispanic women enrolled.

There does not seem to be a correlation between the salary of Black, non-Hispanic males and the number of Black, non-Hispanic males infected with Syphilis or HIV. While they are the gender demographic most impacted with Syphilis and HIV, their salaries ranked closely with other ethnic demographics in many career categories.

There could also be a connection between the fact that males were most impacted with Syphilis and HIV, and the fact that they had a lower graduation than females. In 2015, there were 4,209 male graduate in the Birmingham Metropolitan Area. In comparison, there were 7,503 female graduates.

There could also be a correlation between the fact that Black, non-Hispanics had a graduation rate that was less than half of what the graduation rate was for White, non-Hispanics and the fact that they are the ethnic demographic most infected with HIV and STI’s. In 2015, there were 6,921 White, non-Hispanic graduates and only 3,126 Black, non-Hispanic graduates.
