Chelsea is a city in Shelby County, a county that witnessed a rise in new HIV cases between 2018 and 2019. There were six new HIV infections in 2018 reported at a prevalence rate of 2.8 per 100,000 population.
HIV diagnoses rose to 10 in 2019, rated at 4.7 in every 100,000 persons.
New Gonorrhea infections in the county also increased, according to surveillance records dated 2020 and 2021. In 2020, there were 215 new diagnoses rated at 216.4. 244 new infections were reported the following year.
A similar trend was evident in the number of Syphilis diagnoses reported within the same timeframe. Diseases surveillance records collected in 2020 showed there were seven new Syphilis cases in 2020, rated at 3.1. The number of new infections tripled to 21 in the next year.
There was also a spike in new Chlamydia cases between 2020 and 2021. 607 diagnoses were made in the first year of reference at a rate of 272.2, while there were 638 new infections in 2021.
