What are the STI test options in La Mesa,CA?

The Jewel of the Hills, La Mesa experienced yet another consecutive year for rising rates of the most commonly reported sexually transmitted diseases. Part of San Diego County, the La Mesa area is seeing its highest levels of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis these last two decades. Preventing STIs is high on the county’s priority list.

Infectious syphilis rates rose 15.2 percent between 2016 and 2017. Early syphilis is being caught at higher rate in men than women in the San Diego area, with 85.5 percent of those cases coming from gay or bisexual men. The county news center recommends the following way to prevent STDs: talk openly about STIs with your sexual partners and your medical professional, get tested regularly, reduce your number of sexual partners, and use condoms.

The instances of chlamydia are 1.6 times higher in women than in men of this area, with most cases being woman between 20 and 24.

The total rate of chlamydia diagnoses rose 10 percent—a reported 628.5 cases per every 100,000 people. Gonorrhea is ramping up as well, reporting a whopping 57.6 percent increase from 2015 to 2017.

There are many options available to you for testing in the La Mesa area, though you may have to travel to San Diego. San Diego County runs four STD clinics that offer testing and treatment regardless of your ability to pay. Those four clinics are: Public Health Center in Oceanside, County Health Services Complex on Rosecrans, Central Region Public Health Center on University Avenue, and South Region Public Health Center in Chula Vista. If you’re a young woman under 25, you may be eligible for free chlamydia or gonorrhea testing through a county implemented program.

Your trusted source for comprehensive and unbiased STD testing locations, statistics, and resources. Backed by board-certified physicians and aligned with CDC guidelines, we're committed to providing accurate, up-to-date information to empower your health choices.

What STD tests do I need?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1 (CDC) recommends screening for the most common STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, herpes 1, herpes 2, and HIV for both men and women. In addition, the CDC suggests women get screened for trichomoniasis.

SaferSTD recommends searching for locations that offer a 10-test panel which tests for the most common bacteria and viral STDs in the U.S. with additional premium add-ons like early HIV detection, if needed.

When should I get tested?

The CDC2 provides detailed STD testing information as to when you should get tested. In summary, you should get tested today if you are sexually active, never been tested before, have had unprotected sex in the past, or if you exhibit symptoms.

According to the World Health Organization3, the majority of STI cases reported every day, more than one million, are asymptomatic; another reason to get tested today.

You should get tested again in 90 days to rule out STDs that have specific exposure waiting times, including HIV.

How are STD tests done?

STD testing can be a quick and simple process, depending on the type of test you choose and where you get tested. Some may require an oral or genital swab, a urine test or blood sample, or a physical exam to check your genital area for signs of an STD.

SaferSTD has identified preferred providers that require only a urine test, a blood sample, or both without a physical exam.

How fast do I get my results?

The speed at which you receive your STD testing results depends on where you get tested. Before you choose your location, find out how long testing results will take.

At-home STD testing results are usually 3-5 business days, depending on the manufacturer of your test. You also need to take into account the amount of time it takes to receive the test or pick one up, perform the test, and ship it back, before the lab can analyze your results and report back to you.

If you test at a public facility such as a neighborhood clinic, you may have to wait a week, if not more for the results, which could delay treatment. If you test through a private facility, they have the fastest turnaround within 1-3 business days.

SaferSTD has researched and identified the most accredited and most reputable testing locations. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

What same-day testing locations are available in La Mesa, CA?

Some STD testing clinics offer same-day walk-in options without an appointment. Below are nearby preferred locations that offer this option.

How much will STD testing cost in La Mesa, CA?

The cost of STD testing depends on whether you select private, public, or at-home testing, as well as the type of test(s) you need.

Several at-home STD options and public testing locations can cost up to $250, with most on the higher end, depending on the brand and type of testing. Public testing fees also vary based on income and welfare eligibility.

With private testing, you may save money on a low-cost comprehensive 10-test panel that tests for the most common bacterial and viral STDs in the United States.

SaferSTD has researched and identified reputable locations that offer upfront pricing without hidden fees. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

Additional STD Test Statistics in La Mesa, CA

STD rates in California are the worst they have been in two decades. National statistics show a rise in STDs, and California is worse with this including chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis.

Cases have increased over 10 percent in California for the three STIs since 2014 which was the worst previous year. Here are rates for chlamydia.

  • 479 per 100,000 in the United States
  • 486 per 100,000 in California

San Diego is outpacing the nation overall for rates of STDs, a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals.

The number of chlamydia cases – more than 1.4 million – is the highest of any disease ever reported to CDC. The rates are relatively stable with a 0.7 percent increase overall with 3.2 percent increase in men.

Gonorrhea rates increased 4.1 percent in 2012 compared to 2011 with an 8.3 percent increase in men. Syphilis rates increased 11 percent in 2012, and 75 percent of syphilis cases were reported among men who have sex with men.

“Sexually transmitted diseases are a silent, national epidemic,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Doctors need to talk to their patients, and patients need to be open with their medical providers and disclose their sexual history.”

The percentage increase in the rates of STDs reported locally was higher than that reported at the national level. “Sexually active individuals can decrease their risk of STDs through open discussion with their partners about STDs, condom use, and mutual monogamy,” said M. Winston Tilghman, M.D, senior physician and STD controller for the County Health and Human Services Agency. Last year, the county implemented a free home testing program for gonorrhea and chlamydia available to women 25 years old and younger that can be accessed at DontThinkKnow.org.

Sexual Health Education

STD Testing and Sexual Health Education in La Mesa, CA

Comprehensive sex education is the law in California. This means that all public schools in California are required by law to teach comprehensive sex education and HIV prevention education at least once in middle school and once in high school.

Comprehensive sex education includes learning about anatomy and birth control. It also means students are taught about healthy relationships, decision-making, and more.

This sex education should give students information to make healthy decisions about relationships and sexual and reproductive health. The sex education curriculum in school should include information about:

  • Sexual harassment, sexual assault, and sex trafficking
  • Health relationships
  • Adolescent relationship abuse, intimate partner violence and sexual coercion
  • Sexual orientation and sexuality
  • Gender identity, gender roles, and gender stereotypes
  • Consent, communication, and healthy decision-making
  • HIV prevention and other STD prevention including testing and treatment
  • Pregnancy prevention, parenting, adoption, and abortion

It is the right of a student to get this information in schools. A group called Teen Source asks students if they are actually getting comprehensive sex education at school.

Teen Source provides students with a questionnaire online to fill out to say if they have not received sex education covering all of the above. Teen Source also gives students a chance to explain if they have received information that is not accurate.

A lot of people in college have limited info because they had limited or no sex education. It’s still a big issue in families where people don’t talk about it or it’s considered taboo.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Demographics in La Mesa, CA

A look at demographics can help our understanding of STI rates in your city and region. The demographic that is most likely to be infected and least likely to get tested is people 25 and younger.  Some experts blame the rates of STDs in this demographic in part on the use of new hook up apps that lead to casual sex among people 25 and younger.

HIV diagnoses were 85 percent for men having sex with men in 2013. Gay men saw the highest rates for STDs.  Twice as many women suffer from chlamydia compared to men.

Men suffer in higher numbers than women from other STDs including syphilis and HIV. STD rates also are generally higher in areas with a high poverty rate.

Chlamydia rates in San Diego increased from 496 cases per 100,000 residents in 2011 to 526 cases per 100,000 residents in 2012, a 6 percent increase. High rates of STDs occur among young people and men having sex with men. Forty-five percent of the 16,545 local chlamydia cases were reported in women 24 years of age and under.

Gonorrhea rates in San Diego increased 19 percent, from 69.6 cases per 100,000 residents in 2011 to 82.7 cases per 100,000 residents in 2012. Unlike chlamydia, the highest rates of gonorrhea were reported among men. Of the 2,599 reported cases last year, 767 (30 percent) were reported in males 20-29 years old and 830 (32 percent) were in males 30 years old and over.

Women of all ages accounted for less than a third of total cases (829). Rates in men increased 9 percent from 2011 to 2012. The rate of primary and secondary syphilis increased locally 12 percent from 2011 to 2012 (from 9.3 to 10.4 cases per 100,000 residents).

Gay, bisexual and other MSM constituted the majority (85 percent) of the 328 primary and secondary syphilis cases in San Diego in 2012. Another important statistic to consider is the fact that 61 percent of men having sex with men syphilis cases also had HIV infection, a 22 percent increase from 2011 to 2012.
