The reported cases of primary and secondary syphilis in Hidalgo County rose to a seven-year high in 2016, with 27.3 reported cases per 100,000 people. In addition, chlamydia makes up eighty-six percent of all reported STD’s in Hidalgo County, outpacing all the other STD’s. However, the HIV rate has remained steady in Hidalgo County since 2016, at 9.2 reported cases per every 100,000 people.
Currently, Hidalgo County’s population is 831,073 and per every one hundred thousand people, 521.3 have an STD.
Options for local STD testing include Nuestra Clinica Del Valle (San Juan Women’s Health Center) on West 3rd street and Nuestra Clinica Del Valle (San Juan Women’s Health Center) located on Hackberry Ave.
Other STD testing options include the El Milagro Clinic on East Vermont Ave., Hidalgo County Health and Human Services (Hidalgo County Health Department) located onHackberry, and Valley AIDS Council (McAllen Clinic) on South Second Street.
In addition, the University of Texas Medical Branch (Regional Maternal and Child Health Program) on South Broadway may also be a good option for local STD testing.
There are STD testing facilities that may offer free STD testing as well, however, many locations that provide free testing may not offer the option to schedule an appointment or may have income eligibility restrictions as well as require welfare eligibility. Many of these locations may also require payment for a doctors consultation and many STD tests may not be comprehensive.
