Texarkana, AR is the county seat of Miller County. It also is the largest city within that county. It is the 12th largest city within the state. Texarkana, Arkansas holds the distinction of being the twin city of Texarkana, Texas. Spring Lake Park offers tourists a place to escape and unwind in a beautiful park setting. The park offers pier fishing, disc golf, trails, and playground equipment. In 2014, there were 15,428 cases of Chlamydia reported in Miller county. 25.4% of these cases were found in males while 74.6% were found in females. Arkansas does not require sexual health education. Boards at the school district level decide whether to teach sexual education. If they do decide to teach it, abstinence is required to be taught as the preferred method of prevention. Contraceptives may be discussed, but it is not required that teachers do so. There are also no Safe School Laws in effect.

Several organizations including the Arkansas Citizens First Congress are calling for better sexual health education. There are no Planned Parenthood locations that are near Texarkana. The nearest location is in Fayetteville which is four hours north. Individuals are encouraged to make an appointment online. They are opened Mondays from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, Tuesdays from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm, Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, Thursdays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and Fridays from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. This Planned Parenthood accepts a wide variety of insurances- all of which are listed on their website.

They test for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia using urine samples. Most of their STI tests also require a genital exam. Rapid HIV testing can be done by swabbing the inside of the patient’s mouth and with results in as little as 20 minutes. They offer counseling for those whose tests come back positive.

Finally, there is the Bowie Health Center which is also located on the Texas side of Texarkana. It is six minutes away from the Arkansas side. They are opened Mondays through Thursdays 7:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 1:00 pm to 1:00 pm.

Texarkana provides excellent resources, testing, and treatment for the population it has. It also has the benefit of being able to share resources with its twin city on the Texas side of the state line. While there is no Planned Parenthood within the city limits of Texarkana, there are several local clinics where testing and treatment is provided. Demographics and statistics suggest that Black, non-Hispanics are most likely to contract an STI. It could be argued that this is a result of the poverty level at which Black, non-Hispanics live. Additionally, females are more impacted both due to poverty and lack of preventative health care received.
