According to the Arkansas Department of Health, the state saw a spike in the number of newly reported STD cases, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis from 2016 to 2017. Communities, such as Benton, located in Saline County, are not immune to this growing epidemic.
In fact, according to state records, the number of newly reported chlamydia cases in Saline County jumped from 379 cases in 2016 to 383 cases in 2017. Gonorrhea rates saw an even higher increase, as the number of newly reported cases rose by more than 20 percent.
It was the number of newly reported syphilis rates in Saline County, however, that saw the greatest increase over this two-year period. The number of new cases of primary and secondary syphilis rates jumped by 500%, as these numbers climbed from only 1 reported case in 2016 to 5 newly reported cases in 2017.
Arkansas’ annual HIV surveillance reports found that the number of newly diagnosed cases of HIV in Saline County rose by 50% from 2017 to 2018, as the number of new cases soared from 8 cases in 2017 to 12 cases in 2018.
Benton city residents have access to several health care clinics and centers that may provide STD testing, including Saline County Health Department, MedExpress Urgent Care, Benton Women’s Clinic, Baptist Health Urgent Care and New Beginnings Pregnancy Center. In addition, many local physicians and health care practitioners also offer STD and HIV testing. The majority of these medical practices are located near Military Road and US-70.
While some clinics may promote free STD testing, it’s important to understand that not everyone may qualify for free services. Instead, some patients may need to meet specific residency and income guidelines to be eligible for free testing options. In addition, some health care centers may not offer immediate test results or on-site after-test treatment.
