Additional STD Test Statistics in Greater Carrollwood, FL

Florida has an STD problem and your county has an especially bad problem. Infectious syphilis cases have more than doubled in the state and more than tripled in your county.

This is over the last decade according to the Florida Department of Health. Cases of chlamydia also more than doubled in your county within a decade. Cases of gonorrhea in the state increased slowly but almost all of the increase is attributed to your county.

Ellen Daley is an assistant research professor at the University of Florida’s College of Public Health. She notes that nearly 70 percent of STD cases in the state are for the age group of adolescent to people in their mid 20s.

Florida leads the U.S. in new HIV cases. This comes after years of cuts in public health and not being treated as a crisis by the governor. While the disease spreads, years of personnel cuts in the Department of Health that have shrunk the size of county health departments.

STD Testing and Sexual Health Education in Greater Carrollwood, FL

Some in the state blame the lack of good sex education and consider this the reason for more people contracting STDs. Ellen Daley of the College of Public Health at the University of Florida is among those people.

“That’s one concern, particularly here in Florida,” she said, “that there is just no good sex education in the schools, and that’s the group that doesn’t see the risk. A lot of adolescents think nothing can happen to them. They start to engage in sexual behaviors and they don’t think about the consequences. They may not see the consequences.”

Without good sex education in schools an adolescent according to Daley does not have much choice about where where to learn about sexuality. She cited a study in which parents were asked where they wanted their children to hear about sexuality. Most responded not at school.

“The next question was – Would you rather have them learn it at home? – and the overwhelming response was no,” Daley said. If people are uneasy talking about sex that needs to stop if the numbers of STDs is to drop. This is according to Daley.

“It’s frustrating seeing those kinds of statistics,” she said. “Kids out there don’t know the risk they are taking and they don’t have the skills to access information, to protect themselves and to make wiser decisions.”

The Hillsborough County Health Department is trying to help with the fight against STDs.  According to its annual report for 2012-13, the sexually transmitted disease clinic is the sole remaining public health unit in Tampa “where the public, regardless of socio-economic status can receive an examination, laboratory tests and treatment for a reasonable cost.”

Public health workers get out into the communities to test and treat people who may not have a chance to get to the office for screening. As with most diseases, the earlier the disease is detected, the more effective the treatment.

The health department is implementing an outreach program through which people are screened and treated. They are not allowed to go to public high schools. Continued awareness is key in stemming the trend according to some considering that the main thing is to get testing and know your status.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Demographics in Greater Carrollwood, FL

Demographics play a role in the number of STDs in your area. As one example, Floridians between the age of 15 and 24 account for over half of the reported cases of chlamydia infections. That age group represents only 13 percent of the population.

Carlos Mercado is the sexually transmitted disease program manager for the Hillsborough County Health Department. He looks closed at the rising numbers for STDs. He notes that the jump in syphilis rates is among gay males. He said a main factor in the spread of the disease is that if a man comes in for screening and treatment, he often is hesitant to give the name of his partner.

“They are very concerned about their partner’s privacy,” he said. “But we also are concerned in public health about this.” In many cases, he said, infected clients don’t know the names of their casual sex partners.
