There has been an unexpected surge in STDs among adults of age 65 and up. Data from Arizona Department of Health Services revealed that although STDs are most common among the youth of age 15-29, the rates of gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis have been increasing rapidly among adults 55 years and above. Since 2013, the rate of gonorrhea in adults over the age of 55 have increased from 4.9 cases per 100,000 residents to 6.8 cases per 100,000 people.
Arizona Department of Health Services has put measures in place to curb the spread of STDs. The health department has set aside resources and established programs that protect the most vulnerable population, i.e., youth, pregnant women and women of childbearing age, and men who have sex with men [MSM] against contracting STDs. The department has also increased access to STD tests and treatment to all residents of the county.
