What are the STI test options in North Richland Hills,TX?

As part of the Fort Worth metropolitan area, North Richland Hills can be expected to share that city’s STD problems, but North Richland Hills is a rather affluent suburb. Generally, people from higher-income areas enjoy greater access to health care and better education, which includes greater health awareness. Suburbs also generally have lower STD rates than city centers.

In 2017, there were 5,668 people living with HIV or AIDS in Tarrant County, and most of those were probably in Fort Worth itself. The prevalence rate was 275.9 per 100K people, under Texas’s rate of 320.4.

In 2017, Tarrant County had 8,387 chlamydia cases, at a rate of 408.2 per 100K people. The Texas rate for that year was 511.6. Tarrant County’s gonorrhea and (primary and secondary) syphilis rates were 134.3 and 32.9.

North Richland Hills has a few STD-testing clinics, and there are even more options in Fort Worth if you can get there. The Planned Parenthood in Bedford tests for STIs and treats all of them except HIV. The fee is on a sliding scale.

Some clinics that provide counseling to pregnant women offer free STD testing and treatment, but only for chlamydia and gonorrhea. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation Center in Fort Worth provides HIV testing.

What STD tests do I need?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1 (CDC) recommends screening for the most common STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, herpes 1, herpes 2, and HIV for both men and women. In addition, the CDC suggests women get screened for trichomoniasis.

SaferSTD recommends searching for locations that offer a 10-test panel which tests for the most common bacteria and viral STDs in the U.S. with additional premium add-ons like early HIV detection, if needed.

When should I get tested?

The CDC2 provides detailed STD testing information as to when you should get tested. In summary, you should get tested today if you are sexually active, never been tested before, have had unprotected sex in the past, or if you exhibit symptoms.

According to the World Health Organization3, the majority of STI cases reported every day, more than one million, are asymptomatic; another reason to get tested today.

You should get tested again in 90 days to rule out STDs that have specific exposure waiting times, including HIV.

How are STD tests done?

STD testing can be a quick and simple process, depending on the type of test you choose and where you get tested. Some may require an oral or genital swab, a urine test or blood sample, or a physical exam to check your genital area for signs of an STD.

SaferSTD has identified preferred providers that require only a urine test, a blood sample, or both without a physical exam.

How fast do I get my results?

The speed at which you receive your STD testing results depends on where you get tested. Before you choose your location, find out how long testing results will take.

At-home STD testing results are usually 3-5 business days, depending on the manufacturer of your test. You also need to take into account the amount of time it takes to receive the test or pick one up, perform the test, and ship it back, before the lab can analyze your results and report back to you.

If you test at a public facility such as a neighborhood clinic, you may have to wait a week, if not more for the results, which could delay treatment. If you test through a private facility, they have the fastest turnaround within 1-3 business days.

SaferSTD has researched and identified the most accredited and most reputable testing locations. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

What same-day testing locations are available in North Richland Hills, TX?

Some STD testing clinics offer same-day walk-in options without an appointment. Below are nearby preferred locations that offer this option.

How much will STD testing cost in North Richland Hills, TX?

The cost of STD testing depends on whether you select private, public, or at-home testing, as well as the type of test(s) you need.

Several at-home STD options and public testing locations can cost up to $250, with most on the higher end, depending on the brand and type of testing. Public testing fees also vary based on income and welfare eligibility.

With private testing, you may save money on a low-cost comprehensive 10-test panel that tests for the most common bacterial and viral STDs in the United States.

SaferSTD has researched and identified reputable locations that offer upfront pricing without hidden fees. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

Sexual Health Education

STD Testing and Sexual Health Education in North Richland Hills, TX

On the whole, Texas ranks poorly when it comes to sexual education in local schools. Sexual education programs are not mandated by Texas state law. Some school districts include sexual health in their curriculum, and others do not. This inconsistency is harmful to public health in Texas, especially among teens and young adults.

In 2017, the Texas Freedom Network released a study that found a quarter of Texas public schools do not teach sex education. Of the schools that do teach sexual education, 60% teach abstinence-only education programs. These statistics are startling, and the absence of comprehensive sexual education programs in Texas schools has serious consequences for students.

Comprehensive sexual education has been shown to result in the most positive outcomes for teens and young adults. Abstinence-only sexual education programs, however, are not supported by similar evidence. Studies show that only comprehensive sexual education can help reduce sexual activity and high risk behaviors that contribute to the spread of STDs.

Students in North Richland Hills are served by the Birdville Independent Schools District. Schools include Richland High School, North Richland Middle School, North Ridge Middle School and Smithfield Middle School. Nurses and guidance counselor at these schools can discuss sexual health issues with students.

Additional sexual educational resources are available at local health centers and STD testing centers. Planned Parenthood and the Tarrant County Public Health Department offer sexual health resources.
