Channelview, described by the Handbook of Texas as “an oil refinery suburb of metropolitan Houston”, is facing an STD epidemic. Harris County – where Channelview is located – has the highest rate of sexually transmitted disease cases in the whole of Texas.
In 2017, the Texas Department of State Health Services reported that in Harris County there were over 20,000 chlamydia cases, over 8,000 gonorrhoea cases, and almost 2,800 syphilis cases. Worryingly, all three of these diseases are still on the rise. HIV-rates were relatively stable.
The Texas Department of State Health Services provide multiple supportive and medical services and programs for people living with HIV and STD’s to try and contain the diseases.
There are multiple nearby private and public testing centers available to Channelview residents, with public options including Baytown Clinic on Lee Dr and Tejano Center Clinic on Broadway. Both of these clinics provide HIV and STD testing. Note that Tejano Center Clinic is only available to people between the ages 13 and 24.
Other options include Settegast Health Center on Wayside Dr, Gulfgate Health Center on Office City Dr, and Lyons Clinic on Lyons Ave. All three of these clinics accept both Medicare and Medicaid. They are located in Houston which is just a couple of miles from Channelview.
In case you are worried about the costs, you should know that there may be free std testing available. You must bear in mind, however, that hours and availability might not be consistent, and that there may not be immediate results.
