As essentially part of Houston, Spring shares that city’s STD problems, though Spring’s rates are probably not as high since it’s a suburb and not as densely populated as Houston. In 2017, 1,104 people in Harris County were diagnosed with HIV, at a rate of 23.7 per 100K people. That’s a high rate, but the good news is that it’s been going down, though slowly.

Positive Efforts was established in 1999 due to the need for more HIV/AIDS education directed towards African Americans, Latinos, and men. This organization provides testing and referral services. This organization also provides trauma support, HIV education to decrease HIV risk behaviors, counseling, and promote inner and outer healing by providing conversion groups.

Spring currently follows the state sponsored abstinence only sex education classes, though there are some health clinics that are implementing community outreach programs. While the independent school district does not currently teach students about the dangers of STDs, it is starting to offer additional classes that deal with how to practice safe sex. This is in addition to some of the clinics and nearby college campuses that offer free condoms to teenagers and young adults. What is also surprising is the number of ice houses and local bars who are now keeping a jar of free condoms by the door for their customers.
While distributing free condoms will prevent unwanted pregnancies and lower the risk of contracting an STD, it will not completely stop the spread. There are some that are passed without engaging in intercourse, and the only way to prevent these diseases from spreading to take care of your sexual health. HIV tests in Spring will help prevent it from turning into AIDS. Herpes testing in Spring is also important and will stop the spread of the viral infection.
