Though a part of Houston’s metropolitan area, The Woodlands has lower STD rates than the larger city. In 2017, there were 803 people living with HIV or AIDS in Montgomery County, with a prevalence rate of 140.6 per 100K people, well under the Texas rate of 320.4. That same year, 1,515 people in the county were diagnosed with chlamydia, at a rate of 265.4. The gonorrhea and total syphilis rates were 52.4 and 13.1.
Though those rates are low for Texas, health officials are concerned because they are going up. They blame a number of factors: cuts in federal and state funding for public health, insufficient sex education for youth, resulting in misinformation about the risk factors of unprotected sex, and not enough people being screened, causing them to unknowingly infect others.
They urge all sexually active people to get screened regularly, even if they are not experiencing symptoms.
The Woodlands has a few STD-testing clinics, and there are many more options closer to Houston and other suburbs, including a couple of church-based organizations that counsel pregnant women and provide free STD testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV only.
NextCare Urgent Care on Rayford Rd does STI testing, as does the Montgomery County Public Health Clinic on South Loop.

It is impossible for residents of this planned community to ignore their high STD rate anymore. While part of it is due to the fact that The Woodlands is part of Harris County and the Houston greater metro area, the statistics still show that most will contract at least one STD in their lives.
Residents of this scenic community are also dealing with a high rate of primary and secondary Syphilis infections, along with HIV/AIDS. The number of people that test positive for these transmittable viruses keeps increasing every year. Even though the statistics showed a marked decrease in infection rate for 2009, by 2015 the city and surrounding county had some of the highest percentages in the state.
The statistics also showed that it was not just teens and young adults that were testing positive for a sexually transmitted infection at an alarming rate, but older residents are now finding themselves with an increased risk.
Commonly known by it's initials, PACN is one of the few clinics that specialize in women's reproductive health in the immediate area. When you come in, you'll realize that the clinic is designed to make you "feel at home".
Testing for sexually transmitted diseases is done on a daily basis by a clinician. Lab results usually take a few days.
Start off by making an appointment. It's only a quick phone call. This is also a good time to find out what insurance they take.
PACN is just off I-45, only 20 miles from the downtown area. Metro does go out there, but you might have to make a few bus transfers. The clinic does expect payment when you come in. You can get an idea of what the cost will be when you call to schedule your visit.
26464 I-45, Oak Ridge North, TX 77386, USA
Memorial Women's Specialists (MWS) is primarily an OB/GYN clinic. Their physicians specialize in women's health. However, when it comes to sexually transmitted diseases they recommend that their patients' partners come in as well.
The tests are sent to a third party lab. This can delay results, up to three days or longer for HIV results.
There are two things you need to know before going in. The first is that the clinic needs to know ahead of time when you want to come. The second is that there are fees. MWS does not have a sliding scale fee, though they might allow you to set up a payment plan.
Memorial Women's Specialists is on Gessner, not far from a major bus stop. They also have parking, but the lot does get full quickly.
You can expect to pay for testing, they do not offer if for free.
929 Gessner Rd, Houston, TX 77024, USA
For the last 38 years, AFH has been committed to preventing new HIV infections and helping those that are or have been affected by HIV/AIDS live healthy lives. One of the ways they are doing this is by providing screenings.
The tests are a simple oral swab done by a clinician. You'll know your status before you leave the center.
Testing is free for both STDs. You can also drop by when the clinic is open. There is no need to call ahead.
The AIDS Foundation has a history of working to prevent the spread of the virus, going back almost 4 decades. Testing for Syphilis and HIV is always free. You can also walk in without calling first.
The clinic is on Westpark Dr, not too far from the medical center. This allows you to stay in the area if treatment is something you need.
6260 Westpark Dr STE 100, Houston, TX 77057, USA
Planned Parenthood is one of the first organizations that concentrated on improving women and men's sexual and reproductive health. They are leaders in research and education. They also provide screenings for sexually transmitted diseases.
Testing for STDs does require you to call or visit their website to schedule a day and time for your visit. Online the fees are set, but calling can help you enroll in a financial assistance program. This needs to be done before you go in. Some programs such as MERCK, have an age qualification.
Planned Parenthood is on Louetta Ave. Not only is there a parking lot for patients, but there are several buses that go by throughout the day.
Testing is by appointment, through you can come in anytime for a few other preventative services. Some of these are free, whiles others do have a charge.
4747 Louetta Rd, Spring, TX 77388, USA
With STD and teen pregnancy rates rising it would make sense if the state and city had comprehensive sex education programs in place in its public school districts, but unfortunately this is not the case.
Currently the state does not require its public schools to include information on STDs or contraception, instead it follows the curriculum in the federally sponsored abstinence based programs. This means that while students are taught that refraining from intercourse will help keep them safe, they do not learn that it can’t protect them from sexually transmitted diseases.
Regardless of the name of this group of diseases, you do not need to engage in any type of sexual activity in order to contract one. Knowing this information alone could help protect teens and younger adults, but it is currently not taught in primary or secondary schools.
Students also do not learn how important STD testing is, even if they are not sexually active. Regular Herpes testing in the Woodlands will help prevent the virus from spreading and lower infection rates. Regular HIV testing in the Woodlands is the only way to detect this potentially deadly disease, and it can also help prevent it from being transmitted to others.
One of the reasons why this planned community has such a high STD rate is its location. As a part of the Houston metro area, the Woodlands share many of the same problems. This includes a high transmittable disease rate.
The demographical makeup of the community is primarily Caucasian and this also affects the area’s STD rates. Statistically minority groups have the highest risk for contracting a sexually transmitted disease, but due to its demographics the opposite is true in the city. Another statistical difference is the income level for the area, which is higher than national averages. This means that the majority of residents can afford the cost of regular testing, they are just not taking advantage of the city’s STI clinics.
There are a few community testing centers but crowded waiting rooms are common. The majority of the city’s residents would prefer to not run into a familiar face when they are getting tested, regardless of whether they are positive or not for a STD. Residents often find it difficult to make time in their busy schedules for STD testing, especially if they don’t feel like their behavior has put them at risk.
Like many other cities across the state the lack of education is also contributing to the high infectious disease rates, and statistics show that this is not likely to change unless residents have access to the information they need to keep themselves safe.
Before you catch a concert at the Pavilion or head to one of the expansive community pools take some quality health time. If crowded clinics are holding you back, you still need to get tested for STDS. You can now avoid busy community centers by going to a locale lab. You won’t miss a day at the pool or anticipated concert.
